“I’m not here to start the conversation, I’m just here to make sure the conversation never stops.”
He goes by the name of Merch and is providing today’s music listeners with a fresh and modern perspective to his reaction of recognizing social injustices and systematic oppression. Blending new and old elements of music to create a unique approach to the conversation of racial inequality, police brutality and implicit biases from the perspective of a teenage white kid, “The Son of Karen” is Merch’s representation of being the son of white America. Although in some areas, our society likes to act as if racial inequality is not a real thing, this project serves as a call-to-action for white Americans to work closely and peacefully with minority communities to understand and fight for revisions of the oppressive systems.
This project hosts two features by people of color - J# (pronounced J Sharp) and Chocuba - with both artists offering their own message to white america, creating the necessary balance for this type of project. Starting the EP off with his own message to “Wypipo”, Merch goes off for over 4 minutes reminding white america that racism is no longer tolerated while listing out the multiple black deaths at the hand of “wypipo” - a chilling moment for the history of hip-hop music. This song is followed by “To Strip a Butterfly” featuring J# which starts off as a raw emotional response to the death of George Floyd followed by Merch coming on to apologize for the way this country was built by people of color but destroyed by racist whites. He ends the 3-song EP with the percussive movement of “Now What”, where Merch & Chocuba plead with civil Americans to stop the war and the hate against people of color and the division continually faced in black and brown communities. “Son of Karen” is out now on Apple Music and will be out on all platforms June 24th.
